Howdy internet pals,
Time is a man-made concept that we, on this planet anyway, are slowly getting screwed by. There is never enough of it, unless you are standing in line at fucking Disney, and we seem to burn through this currency like we have an infinite amount.
The concept is depressing, frightening, and also beautiful in a messed-up way. No matter your station in life, we are all bound by the same cosmic time limit.
Some of us choose to burn it. Doomscrolling. Losing thousands of hours that could have become memories.
Some of us are robbed of it, stuck working shit jobs or trapped in other pointless obligations.
And those of us who are parents see time pass in a much different way. Height lines drawn on a wall. Childhood interests shifting. Seasons and traditions repeating while your little people get bigger, smarter, and more independent.
“Resist with all your might.”
When I was writing these lyrics, I pictured my hands digging into space-time itself, fingers clawing against the pull, being dragged forward against my will. A physical revolt against the important moments in life moving on, whether we like it or not.
Even the good days. Especially the best days.
At the end of them, we are pulled into sleep, where more time gets skipped. Then we wake up somewhere new, in a slightly different life than the one we had yesterday.
Musically, I wanted this to be a minimal song, with a “tick, tock” style bass drum pushing everything forward. The chorus follows that same start-and-stop feeling of the clock, keeping the whole song tied to the theme.
Of course, in true ADHD style, I kept adding different sections with clean cello and guitar throughout. I also ended up adding a final section inspired by a game themed around time travel.
So, while the song is technically minimal, there is a lot going on.
In fact, my favorite critic, my wife, said on first listen:
“This song is too many things. I don’t like it.”
I love her, and I trust her taste. However, I can’t stop listening to this one. Something about it clicks with me, so I decided to release it.
