I’ve been writing a ton of lyrics lately. Concepts around witches, secret giants, struggles against time, and a bunch more. I get hit with inspiration a few times per day, and now that my ADHD hyperfocus has an outlet, it hasn’t stopped.
I usually carry a notebook with me wherever I go these days, which, if you’ve seen how bad my handwriting looks, is probably a war crime.
Anyway, on to this story.
It’s inspired by a few different games from my childhood and, honestly, some observations about what’s happening in the world right now.
Here’s the backstory behind the lyrics.
A dark, oppressive energy infects a distant planet, causing its people to ruin their world. Over thousands of years, they lose their technology and only retain the knowledge needed for survival. History becomes myth.
A famous sandworm hunter stumbles upon ancient ruins and publicly retires in order to investigate whether she can put a stop to the planet’s decline.
Teens and young adults decide to follow her around and help. To her dismay, she didn’t ask for help, but she doesn’t refuse it either. Her investigations lead to a powerful underground church that has learned how to focus the oppressive energies through rituals.
When she confronts the leader, she is killed by an evil, focused death beam.
The young and impressionable group of followers retreats and swears to get revenge. They begin finding and destroying dark churches all over the world until they uncover more lost technology: a communications tower transmitting signals to satellites in space.
The young warriors ask the leaders of the population to use one of the last working spaceships to pursue the signal and discover what is happening beyond their world. They are granted the ship.
To space they go, disabling every satellite they come across. In doing so, they are able to triangulate where all the broadcasts are coming from: an asteroid orbiting the system.
They head into the unknown to face whatever caused the collapse of their people.
So yeah, I compressed all of that into a song. Haha.
It might become a short story later, if I can find the time to finish it. Either way, the song is awesome.
I open it with strong drums and bouncing palm mutes. Then I added some spacey-sounding synth, and Riot’s vocals absolutely blew me away.
