Hey…
So, The Tall Men Eat First, is the darkest song lyrically that I’ve ever written. In fact, writing the words made me uncomfortable. It was as if I was confronting something many people know about and ignored for years. I sat on these lyrics for a while before deciding to produce it, and the fact that it made me uncomfortable sort of pushed me to create the song.
As a kid, there was a horror movie called “Phantasm”. Sorta cheesy, campy, but also, very scary to for someone so young. Some of the awkward and cold cinematography made that movie stay with me. It has conspiracy vibes, and for some reason, the demented creative centers in brain overlapped the feeling I got from that film to the utter disgust I feel from the knowledge that there are likely elites preying on kids. They are monsters, and so, I related them to the Tall Man.
The song musically is very dark, gothic(ish) metal. I worked with John Deblasio(Piano player of 40+ years) on a suitable tribute to the phantasm sound track, that was still it’s own song. Together we worked out some haunting notes that really fits the story. Transposing piano to drop B guitar was interesting, but I was able to manage it. For the most part the guitar takes a back seat to the lyrics aside to some interesting palm mutes here and there as well as a short solo. I also spent some time getting the LYRA persona to sing the notes, and layered it in the song in a few places.
Until the dead
come back to collect
The names bleed through
Every bar of black
The song comes out 7/3. Look for it on Spotify or here on the website that morning for links.
Thanks for reading.
